Video editing is a large subject and there are many tools for this trade. That is the crux of the problem, when having too many tools, one doesn't find what he needs, thus might make stupid decisions like buying a tool even though he has all of the tools for free, or as what  most commonly happens - he installs a set of tools while unknowingly installing 3rd party unneeded spam or even spyware and malware, as many tools are disguised as free in order to make the user unknowingly install their spyware on his computer. Thus have I decided to try and mini-map these charted grounds. I won't write about paid applications here as I want to focus on the free ones. After I chose my main tool of the trade for ripping DVDs at my previous post , I want to write down about my whole suite of tools for perfect DVD ripping and basic editing. Before I begin I want to be clear that I don't want to talk about heavy duty video editing tools, where one has a video and audio timelines where he can edit every aspect of the video as well as add text etc. In this post I intend to talk about the light video editing which will consist of the following functionality: Ripping Process Ripping the DVD to the local disk - 1:1 quality rip (no transcoding done) (and all security measures on the dvd will be broken on this stage) - this stage is important as it causes the dvd to work for the shortest time, thus decreasing the wear and tear of the dvd. I used to rip my DVDs several years back, so I had my slew of free software which did the job, and did it well. I used DVD Shrink to grab what I wanted from the DVD, while using DVDDecrypter and DVD43 to overcome the DRM and other dvd security measures. Then I would transcode the dvd which then resided in my harddrive using virtualdub, ususally to Xvid format, while embedding the subtitles in the video. Well, dvds are not so popular anymore (I don't even have a normal dvd drive in my current computers around the house, so I connected an external dvd drive to my computer), and I haven't ripped a dvd for at least five years now, which is light years in computers and technology time. I am working on a project of recreating an old game of Sierra called King's Quest IV - The Perils of Rosella in 3d , I am not working alone, we are a whole team working together. We are using a gaming engine called AGS, which helps in creating games - especially quest games, anyway, this engine enables us to also play video files, but it supports natively only the compressed Theora format, which is an open source video codec which is the equivalent of DIVX just open source (Later on, Google bought the rights for this codec, and have [graded it and are actively using it, but they have left the previous version for the joy of the public). So our graphic designer has created several video files which then she wanted to convert to the Theora format, but apparently it is hard to find a decent codec converter which doesn't need a license in computer science in order to just use it, why? because it is an open source project so anybody who wants to use it needs to be an IT ge...
